Origin LumbarCloud Mattress and Origin Coolmax Latex Pillows Review
As a sleep coach, I’ve long been aware of the importance of quality sleep, but I must confess to having downplayed the role of beds and bedding in the good sleep puzzle. Last year, I realised my faithful back care mattress turned 20, and it was definitely time for an upgrade! I didn’t want to spend a lot of time in bed stores or risk purchasing something that wasn’t comfortable or wouldn’t last. But the thought of finding a mattress online had me worried: Buying a mattress without trying it first? How crazy was that? After a lot of online research, I was convinced by Origin’s reviews, money back guarantee, free delivery and good price point. I ordered the base model Origin Hybrid mattress, and slept on it happily with the addition of a mattress topper I had been using on my old bed.
Fast forward nine months when I asked to review the Origin LumbarCloud mattress. I was excited to try it! The Origin LumbarCloud mattress is a top of the line luxury joint and back support mattress, designed by sleep experts especially for people needing joint support and extra cushioning. This sounded perfect as for the last few years my sleep has been disturbed by health conditions related to hypermobility, including spinal arthritis, shoulder bursitis and fibromyalgia. Anyone who has had pain disrupt their sleep knows what a struggle sleep can be and how poor sleep increases pain. Imagine my surprise and gratitude to find that sleeping on the Origin LumbarCloud mattress has virtually eliminated my shoulder and spinal pain. I’m sleeping more deeply and waking less, I believe partly due to the comfort level of the mattress and partly due to the lack of pain. I’m especially enjoying the 12 cm thick pillow top above the layered wool, foam and titanium spring base, which adds up to a deep 33 cm of mattress. I love going to bed and cuddling into my new mattress which seems to magically contour to my body for the perfect amount of support.
After my experience sleeping on the Origin LumbarCloud mattress, I now believe that the right mattress is important, especially for people who have health or pain issues, hypermobility, back problems, or who are more sensitive to their environment. This mattress would especially suit someone who wants a firm and supportive mattress with a good degree of cushioning that moulds to their shape and sleep position.
I am also using the Origin Coolmax Latex pillows that came with the mattress, and have found that they work well for me as a side sleeper due to the deep pillow top of the Origin LumbarCloud mattress. They are cool to sleep on and I appreciate that they are hypoallergenic, made from natural rubber latex, and have a 2-year warranty, which means they are designed to last. The height and firmness of these pillows would suit most back and stomach sleepers as they help to keep the head and neck well aligned. A side sleeper who doesn’t have the LumbarCloud mattress or a mattress with a deep pillow top might need a little additional height under the pillow for it to take the weight off the shoulder. I’ve also enjoyed using this pillow lying on my back for my yoga relaxation practice as it’s low but firm. Weighing in at 2 kg, this pillow would definitely be my weapon of choice in a pillow fight!
It wouldn’t be a fair review if I didn’t mention a few downsides to the Origin LumbarCloud mattress. There aren’t many, but it did take me about five days to get used to the mattress as I’m a bit like the princess and the pea and it felt quite different to mattresses I had slept on previously. It’s a solid mattress weighing 50 kg, so with my health issues, I need help changing the sheets. I’ve added a mattress topper to stop the sheets sliding around on the slightly slippery Tencel mattress top, and I plan to buy “deep queen” sized sheets which will fit better. Lastly, as it is a mattress that came rolled in a box, the sides dip a little when sitting on the edge of the bed, but sleeping on the edge is no problem as the mattress seems to firm up around me.
As a sleep coach for over a decade, I have learned that fixing your sleep is not just about sleep hygiene or stress management or relaxation training. Rather, it is a puzzle of putting together the right pieces of support to allow one’s body to regain its natural function. Sleeping on the Origin LumbarCloud mattress has been one piece to my better sleep puzzle, and has convinced me that mattress choice is an important factor in good sleep.
